FOLGARIA AND SURROUNDINGS

Folgaria and Surroundings

Folgaria, one of the oldest communities in Trentino

Of German-Cimbrian origin (Bavarian settlers arrived on the plateau from the 13th century), during its centuries-old history it fought hard against feudal power – in particular against the Trapp, feudal lords of Castel Beseno – in defense of its privileges of free and independent community: for this reason it still boasts the honorific title of Magnifica Comunità.

The municipal coat of arms is composed of three fir trees lined up inside an oval shield that represent the forest, the ancient collective wealth of the Community.

There are no official documents attesting to the birth of the Magnifica Comunità, however it is known that at the beginning of the XII century Folgaria was already an organized community, governed by administrative bodies with wide popular and democratic participation.

The Magnifica, like the other municipal rules of Trentino, was dissolved in authority in January 1805 on the orders of the Bavarian government, inspired by the Enlightenment.
At that time the municipalities as we know them were born.

The fractional centers of Folgaria are seven: Costa, Serrada, Guardia, Mezzomonte, San Sebastiano, Carbonare and Nosellari.

The pride and joy is the center of the town with a long pedestrian avenue full of shops, bars, pastry shops, restaurants where you can buy typical Trentino dishes and taste the delicacies of Trentino food and wine.
Renowned tourist resort, it is excellently equipped for summer holidays and for skiing holidays:

the Alpe Cimbra ski carousel includes over 100 km of slopes for alpine skiing and over 100 km of slopes for Nordic skiing, while in summer the Folgaria Golf Club – 18 holes at 1200 m altitude – and the Bike Area are sportsmen’s paradise.
